This guide will show you how to find your own ring size or someone else’s ring size when you are shopping for a ring gift.
EASIEST: PURCHASE A RING SIZING TOOL
As ring sizing is difficult to get accurately, the easiest and most accurate way is to use a ring sizing tool, which you can get easily for 5-7 dollars.
Use the rod-shaped ring sizer mandrel when you have an existing ring that fits you well and has similar thickness and style to the one you are getting. Simply slot the ring on the mandrel and read the size marking where the ring fits.
The ring sizer tool has multiple rings of incremental sizes. Simply slot the rings on the finger you plan to wear your ring until you find your size.

If you are not getting your ring measured professionally or with a tool, you will be looking at measuring it with tools available at home. Before you start with any sort of measurement, one thing to remember is NEVER use diameter for your ring size measurement. Instead, always use its inside circumference.
While it might be tempting to simply run a ruler across the ring instead of measuring its inside circumference, and many ring size charts on the Internet do include diameter in their chart, using diameter will almost always result in the wrong size as it is an extremely precise measurement that you often can’t get right at home. Just 1/16 of an inch off can bring you 3-4 sizes up easily!
Method 1: If you have an existing ring
Find a ring. Choose a ring that fits the finger you intend to wear the new ring snugly, but is loose enough to go over the knuckle. Make sure the ring has similar style and band width to the one you are getting. A wide band ring will fit more tightly than a skinnier ring.
Print a ring sizing chart. Many online jewelry retailers offer printable circular ring size charts that has circles of increasing sizes that correspond to different ring sizes.
Place your ring over the circles on the chart. Whichever circle that matches the inside of the ring is the size you should get. If two sizes look like they both fit, opt for the larger size.
Method 2: If you do not have an existing ring
You could use a printable wraparound ring sizer to measure your size. Follow this link and make sure your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling using the print dialog box, then follow the instructions on that page, which will consist of 3 steps as shown above.
TIPS:
– The wider the ring band, the tighter the fit. If the ring you are buying has a wide band, you most likely should go half to one size up.
– Measure at the end of the day when you are warm as this is when your fingers are at their largest. Your fingers will be at least half a size smaller when cold or in the morning.
– Remember that a printable ring sizer is still not a professional measurement of your ring size. A visit to your local jeweler or use of the ring sizer tool is still your best bet at getting your ring size accurately measured.

Method 1: Ask around about his/her ring size
Sometimes the simplest way is just to ask. You could ask someone close to the recipient, as they are the most likely to have gotten a ring for her/him.
With a bit of tact, you could ask her/him casually. You could tell the recipient that you are getting a ring for someone else, and did not want to ask them and he or she appear to have similar finger size.
Method 2: Use an existing ring they already own
Borrow their ring. If you are close to the recipient, borrow one of their rings if you can come up with a good excuse. You can then easily bring it to a jeweler to get it sized.
Trace one of their rings. If you can’t borrow her ring for enough time to bring it to a jeweler, you can trace the ring quickly on a piece of paper. Just lay the ring flat and trace the inside with a pencil. Therefore, make sure the ring you borrow can actually lay flat.
Cut the paper ring following the pencil trace and matches it with the printable circular ring size chart above to find the ring size.
Method 3: Other methods
Consider an adjustable ring. Rings with an open band is great for gifts, as they can be adjusted up or down 1-2 sizes. Look for someone else with similar hand size, or even against your own, compare them with the gift recipient’s fingers to buy an open-band ring.
